Many patients are anaemic when they come to surgery. The importance of this has been highlighted in guidelines recently published by the National Blood Authority. Anaemic patients are more likely to require blood transfusion after surgery. Of these anaemic patients, about half are found to have iron deficiency. If iron deficiency is treated before surgery, then the rate of transfusion is diminished, but if the iron deficiency is treated after surgery, then the rate of transfusion is not significantly altered.
