Dr Cristina Vargas graduated in Medicine in 2004 and completed postgraduate training in anatomical pathology in Mexico City in 2007. She then enrolled and completed a PhD program in several aspects of breast molecular pathology at the University of Queensland in 2013. Dr Vargas joined the specialist training in anatomical pathology with the RCPA, undergoing rotations in several hospitals in Brisbane (Princess Alexandra, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Forensic and Scientific Services) and in Sydney (Royal Prince Alfred and Westmead Hospitals), also holding a molecular pathology registrar position at RPA Hospital. After obtaining Fellowship with the College in 2015, she worked in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital as a Fellow in Molecular Pathology and as a general pathologist, developing experience in head and neck, breast and skin pathology. Her main areas of interest include breast, head and neck, gastrointestinal tract and haematopoietic pathology, as well as the application of molecular techniques to tissue diagnosis - molecular pathology. Dr Vargas has also continuously been involved in research pathology, mostly in the field of breast cancer research.
